The Richmond-Petersburg metropolitan area has a population of 974,000. Richmond, the state capital, is a leading center for manufacturing, finance, trade, and corporate headquarters. Five Fortune 500 firms have their headquarters in this region of Virginia. Many companies are relocating their headquarters or planning to build manufacturing plants in this region, which also is known for important state and federal government activities. Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) sits on 78 acres and is located in Richmond's Fan District. VCU's location in the capital of Virginia gives their students a unique opportunity to combine academic and real-world education, allowing them to create their own educational goals. Virginia Commonwealth University is a Carnegie Research-I University, one of the three largest research doctoral institutions in the Commonwealth. Sixteen of their graduate, professional programs are ranked by U.S. News & World Report as among the best in the nation. Twelve are ranked in the top 20. VCU traces their founding to 1838 when the medical department of Hampden-Sydney College opened in Richmond and later became the Medical College of Virginia. In 1968, MCV and the Richmond Professional Institute merged to create VCU, an institution with two campuses whose mission is uniquely oriented to the challenges and opportunities of metropolitan communities. VCU's MCV Campus is now one of the most comprehensive academic health centers in the nation, complementing their nationally ranked School of the Arts, School of Social Work, and other schools and programs.
