Richmond's 17th Street Farmer's Market, located in Richmond's Historic Shockoe Bottom, is the oldest public marketplace of its kind in the country. Shockoe Creek once ran adjacent to the site used by Indians to trade in produce. Colonial use dates back to 1737 when the area was designated for fairs. In 1779, the area officially became a market and has continued until today.
